Forbidden Island
The Island is sinking, man, and I don’t wanna swim. A group of explorers have come to the Forbidden Island to find the lost treasures. As previously mentioned there’s a plot twist; the island is sinking. Now those explorers must hurry to find the treasure, and to save their own lives.
Year of Release: 2010
Number of Players: 2-4
Playing Time: 30 min
Listed Age: 10+
Mechanics: Cooperative, Pick-up and Deliver
Theme in a Nutshell: Treasure hunting while surviving a disaster
What I like:
The theme works very well in this cooperative game, where you act as explorers trying to get the sweet loot, err I mean precious artifacts off of the island before it sinks in to the ocean. If you’ve ever played Pandemic, this will feel very familiar as it uses many of the same mechanics. Call it Pandemic light.
It’s very easy to teach and learn, but there are multiple difficulty levels, that helps keep the game challenging for players of all skill levels. The hardest level is real tough yo.
A wonderful gateway game; something that lots of people have entered the hobby playing.
My Rating: 7/10
What I don’t like:
It’s fairly basic, and as you get better at the game, you’re mostly just battling how lucky you are with the card draws. Even though each setup is unique, it really doesn’t change how you play.
Is it good for kids and families?
Forbidden Island is the game I most recommend to families looking to start getting in to board games. A great introductory family game, as the parents can “help” the kids along with the game, as you pretty much can play the game collectively. There’s no hidden information between players, and the kids can easily ask for help deciding on what to do on their turn.
